TRAINING

Training is kind of a funny word when it comes to horses.  Sometimes we try to figure out if we are training the horses or the are training us.  The thing that most people fail to realize or at least remember about horses is that they are prey animals.  Being a prey animal means that they are food for most other animal species by nature.  A horses basic response to fear or uncertainty is to buck, kick, or run away and us as humans ae trying to take these natural defenses away from them in the training that we do.  Just think for a minute if someone jumped out from a dark place and grabbed you what would your initial reaction be.  I am willing to bet at the least you would "SPOOK" away if not strike back.  Now think about that horse eating Wal-Mart bag,.......HUMMMMM.......Its not that they are bad, or stupid, or even mean, it is that they are unsure and they are in their protection mode which is to run, buck, or kick at it.  When you are on their back and they react to any kind of outside stimuli such as sacks, leaves, cows, loud noises or anything else your reaction to their reaction plays a big part on where you go from there.

We will take the time to make sure your horse has the proper ground training that they need before any riding is ever considered.  The most important part of your horses training starts on the ground.  Once we get the trust and respect then we move on to the riding part of the training.

Ceci speciality is the starting of young horses. She will take them from halters and leading, to round pen work, up to breaking, and riding.  She will transition a horse from its first step all the way to the track, endurance course, or barrel race.  She has worked the last year and a half for Allegra Farms in Columbus, Mississippi breaking, training, and conditioning their three year old for the track.  She has been a stable part of these horses lives since they were babies.  The new babies born the last two seasons she has imprinted and started them with halters and leading within three days of birth.  We play with their feet, ears, mouth, belly's, and every part that horses don't like messed with in order to get them past the shyness associated with these issues.

I usually consintrate on horses that maybe have been out to pasture for a while or maybe they are changing disciplines (such as halter to endurance, or barrels to trail riding) and aren't quite where the owner wants them.  We have encountered people that have purchased horses that were doscile and out of shape when they got them.  After a little conditioning they become unmanageable or very high strung or difficult.  We try in our training to bring the horse under control by working with it to show boundries and its job.  In the mean time it is important not to break a horses spirit and bring it down to a level that it is well above.  If the case is that a horse is just too much athlete for a persons ability we also give lessons to the owners so that they can know how to handle their horse in a better manner.

After all, we can train and condition a horse to the best of our ability and if the horse goes back to the same environment and a owner that is scared or won't continue on what we start then all the training in the world will do no good, no matter who is doing the training.
